How to find all Dark Side power moons
Our power moons guide puts the collectibles in the same order as Super Mario Odyssey.
1. Arrival at Rabbit Ridge
You’ll get this power moon after defeating the Broodals in the multi-floor gauntlet. Check out the video above and the tips below to see how we did it.
- First floor: Don’t worry about throwing Cappy at Topper after the first round. Instead, wait for him to spin his pile of hats around and jump on him when he does that.
- Second floor: Run in a circle around Harriet as she throws her remote bombs. As soon as she throws the ones connected to her pigtails, turn and head toward them and then hit them with Cappy.
- Third floor: Throw Cappy at Spewart as soon as the fight begins, then jump and land on his head. Repeat the process, standing in place or backing up against the edge of the playable area.
- Fourth floor: Wait until the moment when Rango throws his hats and then jump at him. Land on his head a few times, and you’ll win.
- Roof: Capture a Hammer Bro as soon as you begin, and throw hammers at the giant machine’s legs. Waggle your controller as you toss the hammers to throw them faster and end the fight sooner. Avoid Robobrood in the interstitial sections where it pounds the ground with its feet and runs around the arena.
2. Captain Toad on the Dark Side!
Captain Toad is hanging out near the pipe between the fourth floor (Rango) and the roof. Walk past the pipe to find him.
3. Breakdown Road: Hurry and 4. Breakdown Road: Final Challenge!
Here on the Dark Side of the moon, things are difficult. Like this grind of a room, for example. We wish we had a super secret trick to help you through, but the truth is that these power moons are just difficult to get. They rely on your jumping skills, and you won’t have Cappy to help you.
There are some things that will help you, though. Here are our tips:
- Get both moons in one run. The easier moon — 3, the one that appears after you collect the key — still requires you to double back over disappearing terrain. It’s not easy. In fact, it’s hard. You didn’t come this far to get just one power moon, right? Might as well just do two hard things together especially because if you get one, the other is trivial to collect.
- Use the top floor as practice for the bottom floor. There are opportunities on the top floor that will help you hone the skills you need on the bottom floor. Use it as a way to practice your long jumping skills.
Check out the video above to see how it’s done.

One of your main goals in Super Mario Odyssey is to get your hands on power moons which will help you power up your trusty ship, the Odyssey. While you don’t need to get your hands on all of them to beat the main campaign, you will need many power moons for various endgame activities like unlocking new outfits and areas to explore.
There are dozens of power moons in almost every kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey. You can find some of them the moment you enter a kingdom. Others appear only after you’ve been beaten certain challenges. Yet more power moons only become available after you’ve beat the game’s main story.
To help you get your hands on each power moon in Super Mario Odyssey, follow a link below to the kingdom of choice. From there, we’ll show you the location of each power moon and any strategies you might need to get your hands on them.

There are two kinds of collectibles in nearly every Super Mario Odyssey kingdom: power moons and coins. In this guide, we’ll show you where to find the Seaside Kingdom’s power moons. (Check out our guide to Seaside Kingdom’s purple coins to find those, too.)
Seaside Kingdom moon names
You’ll need 10 power moons to move on from the Seaside Kingdom. Moons 1-5, 11, 16, 17 and 32 are easy to pick up while you fight off this kingdom’s boss.
When you first arrive in the Seaside Kingdom, you’ll see a list of 52 power moons in your menu. Weirdly, you can’t collect them all yet. Also, there are more than 52 moons here. Here’s how it works:
- You can collect moons 1-48 and 50 on your first visit.
- Moons 49, 51 and 52 will become available a little later in the game.
- Moons 52-71 will pop out of the moon rock when you destroy it (after you beat Bowser).

Our power moons guide puts the collectibles in the same order as Super Mario Odyssey.

You’ll get each of the first four moons in this kingdom while unblocking one of the springs. The first is straight north of the Odyssey’s landing site. Follow Bowser’s footprints toward the tall stone pillar. Capture a Gushen nearby and use it to climb the ledges up to the top. Grab the moon, then ground pound the button to launch the first cork.
2. The Lighthouse Seal

This moon is, unsurprisingly, on the lighthouse, a little northwest of moon 1. You have to go the long way around to get there, though. Pass the lighthouse on the right side and follow the sandy island to a well — just watch out for the Moonsnakes. Dive down into the well and capture a Cheep Cheep.
The tunnel is long and full of Maw-Rays. Watch for the holes in the walls, floor and ceiling of the tunnel — that’s where the Maw-Rays will attack from. Continue along the tunnel until you get to the end. Use the pipe to get to the top of the lighthouse, grab your moon and launch another cork.
3. The Hot Spring Seal
The next moon is on the (very) hot spring island in the northeast. Use a Gushen to clear the lava away from the island — start with one of the pools so you have a fresh supply of water. Once you clear enough lava, you’ll see your next moon in the water.
4. The Seal Above the Canyon

Head to the east of the Odyssey along the beach. You’ll come to the Rolling Canyon flag. If you look to the south, you’ll see a canyon with a ton of spiny shells rolling down it. (Since you’re heading this way, it makes sense to grab moon 32 along the way.) Just to get moon 4, though, all you have to do is avoid the spiny shells and run all the way to the top of the canyon. Smash your way through the crate wall, and you’ll find a flag, a moon and another cork-launching button.
5. The Glass Is Half Full!

To get this moon, you’ll have to defeat the lava-headed Brigadier Mollosque-Lanceur III, Dauphin Of Bubblaine (hereafter referred to as “the octopus” because we’re not writing that every time). This isn’t an easy fight. Use a Gushen to clean the lava off his head while you chase him all over the seaside. After you clean off the lava, you’ll have to corner him and ground pound his head a few times. All while avoiding the shells he spits at you.
6. On the Cliff Overlooking the Beach
Near the Odyssey, turn around and look at the cliffs behind you (to the south). You’ll see this moon on a high cliff. Grab one of the Gushens close to shore and use it to start climbing up the ledges. There’s a pool to the right (with three purple shell coins) where you can recharge your Gushen. Once you refuel, fly back to the left and up to find your moon.
7. Ride the Jetstream
There’s a square cave in the cliff just a little to the west of the Odyssey. Grab a Gushen and head there. Inside, you’ll have to maneuver around a little to grab your moon. There’s a pool of water on the right if you need to recharge your Gushen.
8. Ocean-Bottom Maze: Treasure

Just to the northwest of the Glass Palace flag (about halfway between the Glass Palace and the Lighthouse), there are four 8-bit pipes on the ocean floor. They all take you to different corners of the same maze. Drop into the southwestern one, then head to the left wall. There are three invisible boxes here that you need to hit — this completes a path you’ll take to the moon in a minute. Swim up to the northeastern pipe and drop back into the maze. Head to the left and generally down until you land on those three invisible blocks. Head to the right to grab the moon.
9. Ocean-Bottom Maze: Hidden Room
- Nintendo

- Nintendo
In the same area as moon 8 above, drop into the 8-bit maze through the southeastern pipe. Climb the stairs to the left and stomp on the red Koopa at the top. Kick its shell off to the left where it will bounce around some, then break a block below you. Drop down, then sprint to the right. Duck at the last minute to slide through the gap you just opened. Your moon is waiting for you inside. Repeat the sprint-duck-slide to the left to get back out and exit through the southwest corner pipe.
10. Underwater Highway Tunnel
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
Head to the far northwest corner of the map, then drop to the ocean floor and look south. There are three Cheep Cheeps patrolling a square tunnel. Grab a Cheep Cheep then swim a little way into the tunnel. There is a square of bricks below you. Spin attack to smash them, then swim straight down to find the moon.
11. Shh! It’s a Shortcut!
In the northeast of the map, head to the Ocean Trench East flag. Just to the south, there’s a tunnel in the ocean floor. Grab a Cheep Cheep and swim inside. About halfway through, there’s a moon waiting for you.
12. Gap in the Ocean Trench

In the Ocean Trench about halfway between the East and West Ocean Trench flags, you’ll find a Sphynx. Above its head in the wall behind it, you’ll find a small tunnel. Head inside and turn to the right. Drop down at the next intersection for your moon.
13. Slip Through the Nesting Spot

In the very northeast of the map, look for some bubbles rising out of the seafloor in front of a cave. This cave has a Maw-Ray inside, so be careful approaching. Follow the Maw-Ray inside and turn to the right almost immediately to find a tunnel hiding your moon. Just be careful because it’s very easy to swim right past this tunnel.
14. Merci, Dorrie!
Find the purple Dorrie — it’ll be on your map because the purple store is on his back. He’s got a moon under his belly.
15. Bonjour, Dorrie!
This moon is floating high above the yellow Dorrie — which will also be on your map as the yellow store. Grab a Gushen to launch yourself high enough to reach it.
16. Under a Dangerous Ceiling
This moon is under the western end of the sandy island just to the west of the Hot Spring Island. There’s a shelf with a bunch of upside-down Komboos hanging from the ceiling. Handle them, then either ground pound or spin attack the glowing area on the ground to reveal your moon.
17. What the Waves Left Behind
There are a few rocky tide pool islands on the east side of the map, just north of the Odyssey. Look for the one with a Komboo stalking around inside the donut-shaped island. Take out the Komboo, then ground pound the pool to find your moon.
18. The Back Canyon: Excavate!
- Nintendo

- Nintendo
Way down in the southeastern corner of the map — you’ll have to do a lot of swimming to get there — you’ll find a little cove with a Moonsnake rolling around in it. Avoid the Moonsnake and start climbing up the ledges. You’ll find a glowing patch of ground near another Moonsnake higher up. Ground pound it while dodging the Moonsnake to retrieve your moon.
19. Bubblaine Northern Reaches

- Nintendo
In the far north of the sea, right in the middle — it’s about halfway between the East and West Ocean Trench flags, right along the crease in your map — you’ll find four mounds on the ocean floor just north of the Ocean Trench. Spin attack the one that is glowing. That will summon a handful of Komboos. Spin attack those as well, then repeat the process two more times on the other mounds. When you’re done with the three around the outside, the central mound will glow. Spin attack that mound to find your moon.
20. Wriggling on the Sandy Bottom

Head to the Lighthouse flag. Grab any nearby Cheep Cheep, then swim to the north end of the Lighthouse island. Look along the seafloor to find a red door. Inside, you’ll see a glowing mound rushing all around the room. Hit it with Cappy to stun it, then ground pound it to reveal the moon.
21. Glass Palace Treasure Chest
This moon is, as the name suggests, at the Glass Palace. Grab a Cheep Cheep and head to the east end of the island where you’ll find a tunnel that runs underneath the palace. It’s full of Komboos, so spin attack your way inside. Watch the left side for another tunnel. Hit the chest you find there to get your moon.
22. Treasure Trap Hidden in the Inlet

Head straight west from the Odyssey along the beach. Watch for a place where the sea comes right up to the rock wall on your left. Dive down, then walk under the rock wall. Inside are four chests that have to be opened in a certain order (you’ll see the order if you do it wrong) or you’ll release a few Chinchos. Hit the chests in the right order (look in the gallery above for the answer) and you’ll get your moon.
23. Sea Gardening: Inlet Seed
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
Moons 23-26 involve finding seeds scattered around the Seaside Kingdom and returning them to the rooftop garden at the Beach House — the Beach House is on the beach to the west of both the Odyssey and moon 22.
The Inlet Seed is in the inlet where you found moon 22. Turn north, away from the rock wall, and fight your way through the Komboos until you find it. Run it back to the rooftop garden and plant it. Water it by spraying it with a Gushen until it blossoms and releases its moon.
24. Sea Gardening Canyon Seed
Moons 23-26 involve finding seeds scattered around the Seaside Kingdom and returning them to the rooftop garden at the Beach House — the Beach House is on the beach to the west of both the Odyssey and moon 22.
You’ll find this seed high above the southeastern corner of the beach, above where you picked up moon 18. You can travel the same way you went to get moon 18 (and then just go a bit further), or you can use a Gushen to fly straight up to it. Run it back along the beach to the rooftop garden and plant it. Water it by spraying it with a Gushen until it blossoms and releases its moon.
25. Sea Gardening: Hot-Spring Seed
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
Moons 23-26 involve finding seeds scattered around the Seaside Kingdom and returning them to the rooftop garden at the Beach House — the Beach House is on the beach to the west of both the Odyssey and moon 22.
This seed is on a little spit of land sticking off the northeast side of the Hot Spring Island. There’s not really a shortcut here, so you’re just going to have to carry it all the way to the opposite corner of the kingdom. Swim it southwest, avoiding as many enemies as you can along the way. Return to the rooftop garden and plant it. Water it by spraying it with a Gushen until it blossoms and releases its moon.
26. Sea Gardening: Ocean Trench Seed
Moons 23-26 involve finding seeds scattered around the Seaside Kingdom and returning them to the rooftop garden at the Beach House — the Beach House is on the beach to the west of both the Odyssey and moon 22.
The final seed is on a pedestal just to the right of the Sphynx in the Ocean Trench. You’ll have to swim this one all the way back, too. Plant it with the other three in the rooftop garden. Water it by spraying it with a Gushen until it blossoms and releases its moon.
27. Seaside Kingdom Timer Challenge 1
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
Just south of Hot Spring Island — about halfway to the next island to the south — look for a big crack in the ground. It’s right on the other side of an underwater cliff, so it might take a little looking to spot it, but the giant red button inside helps. Smack the button, then head into the 8-bit wall to retrieve your moon.
28. Seaside Kingdom Timer Challenge 2
A little to the northeast of the Glass Palace island, you’ll find a scarecrow to start this trial. All you need to do is swim straight west to retrieve the moon, but you’re going to really short on time. The quickest way through is to use the ZL + Y quick swim move.
29. Found on the Beach! Good Dog!

Look for the dog on the beach near the Odyssey, and make friends by playing fetch with Cappy. Head west along the beach toward the inlet from moon 22. There are three moons at the edge of the inlet. When you get there with your new good boy friend, he’ll dig around and reveal a moon for you to pick up.

Down in the southeast corner of the map, just a little northeast of the Rolling Canyon flag, you’ll find another scarecrow at the bottom of the sea. Drop through the grate that opens, then continue dropping all the way to the bottom. There’s a Maw-Ray down here with you, so be prepared to do some dodging. Do a quick loop of the hole you’re in to find four of the moon shards while picking up oxygen bubbles . The fifth is a little higher up on a ledge along the south wall.
31. Taking Notes: Ocean Surface Dash
On the beach right next to the Beach House, you’ll see a Rocket Flower and a Musical Note along a sandy ramp. Line up the Rocket Flower with the Note, then toss Cappy. The Rocket Flower will launch you through the first note, then you just have to hang on and not swerve too much to gather up the rest. This moon will appear nearby when you get them all.
32. Love by the Seaside

Down at the bottom of the Rolling Canyon — right next to the Rolling Canyon flag — capture one of the Goombas wandering around. Stack up all the other Goombas in the vicinity — there are five total — and very carefully make your way up the canyon. Not too far up the slope, you’ll meet a lady Goomba who will drop a moon when your stack approaches her.
33. Lighthouse Leaper
Once the area is freed from the fancy octopus with the elaborate name, a Glydon will appear at the top of the Lighthouse. Capture it and glide straight east toward the Glass Palace — there’s a Bubblainian that really wants to see a landing right on the beach. Land the Glydon close enough, and you’ll get a moon.
34. Good Job, Captain Toad!

Captain Toad has made his way to the Seaside Kingdom, but he’s pretty tough to get to. Go to the Rolling Canyon flag, and capture a nearby Gushen. Be judicious with your boosts, and make your way up the canyon, avoiding the rolling spiky-shells. There are two pools where you can recharge your Gushen on the way up — the first is right behind the Goombette you met while getting moon 32, and the second is just around the next corner. Continue uphill to the next flag, then turn left. Captain Toad is on a ledge above you and a little to the west. You’ll have to ditch the Gushen when you arrive — he’ll be too scared to talk otherwise.
35. Ocean Quiz: Good!
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
- Nintendo
Super Mario Odyssey’s numbering makes this a little confusing, but you’ll actually get access to moon 40 before you can get this moon. Head back to the Sphynx — it’s in the Ocean Trench halfway between the East and West Ocean Trench flags. Swim down and interact with it. You’ll have to answer four more questions to get your moon.
- Bowser stole four fountains
- You attack when you shake the Joy-Cons while you control a red fish
- You need the resort outfit in this kingdom
- The Sphynx is there to ask questions.
Answer all four correctly and you’ll get your moon.
36. Shopping in Bubblaine
Find the yellow Dorrie on the west side of the map near the Lighthouse — the gold coin store is on his back. You can pick up this moon from the store for 100 coins.
37. Beach Volleyball: Champ
Out in front of the Beach House, you’ll find half of a volleyball court. When you stand on it, the nearby coach will start hitting balls to you. All you have to do is get underneath it (or, really, just near to it) and you’ll return the ball. Do this 15 times, and you’ll get a moon.
Watch the shadow instead than the ball to make sure you’re in the right spot. Toss Cappy to make any returns that you’re not quite close enough to get.
38. Beach Volleyball: Hero of the Beach!
It’s easy enough to get 15 returns, but you won’t get the next moon until you return 100. That’s a huge task. Here’s how to do it:
- Stay in the middle. The middle of the court is the closest point to any of the four corners. If you need to run to them, the shortest distance is from the middle. This is your home. If you stray from it, return to it.
- Running is the best way to aim Cappy. Running around the court to hit the ball won’t be an option when the serves get faster, so don’t bother becoming an expert at that. Instead, concentrate on anticipating where the ball will land and running toward it, throwing Cappy just as it’s about to land. Use the first phase of the minigame when the ball travels slowly to hone your craft.
- Don’t run too far. We say “running” above because that’s Mario’s only option. But if you also need to stay in the middle, how does running fit in with that? Well, there’s a moment as you first press a direction when Mario just moves his legs and doesn’t go very far. That’s what we mean by running. You’ll move a few feet from the middle of the court, but you typically won’t need to move far. Ultimately, running like this is a far more accurate way to aim Cappy than just pressing a direction on the analog stick. So run … but just a little.
In the video above, you can see our strategy in action. Check it out.
