Luna Elegant is the youngest of the three Holy Maidens, and one of the main female protagonists of Maou-sama, Retry!.
Hakuto Kunai noted she is attractive.
Because of her natural talent, she was raised like a flower, so she is unbelievably self-centered. She behaves properly in front of her sisters, but she is planning on having them succumb to her in time. Thanks to Hakuto disciplining her with a spanking, Luna starts behaving better.
Luna has a subconscious perverted side; she constantly projects her own perverted ideas on Hokuto, thinking it’s what he’s doing.
Luna grew up in an orphanage in the Holy City’s business district with her best friend Eagle. At age six, the girls received a single Bronze Coin from a Holy Maiden, and immediately headed out to purchase a loaf of bread. While passing by the high-class restaurant Artemis, a group of nobles express disgust at the sight of the orphans, their rude comments angering Luna. She threatens to make them pay before frightening her harassers with an impressive display of magic. Later while sharing a meal with her companion, Luna expressed her desire to become a Holy Maiden, with Eagle agreeing to stay by her side as a servant when the time comes.
She eventually joins the church with the intention of making her dreams a reality, practicing magic in the hopes that her talent would be recognized. At eight years old, Luna was visited by a messenger from the church, informing her that she had been selected as a Holy Maiden candidate. Wanting to be with her friend, Luna asked if Eagle, posing as her servant, could join her. Having been aware of Eagle’s true nature, the messenger claims Eagle had already been executed for the crime of being born a demi-human, warning Luna that she should be careful with whom she associates with in the future if she truly wishes to be a Holy Maiden. Realizing her own powerlessness, this incident served as emotional fuel for her to train herself to receive the title. She refused to believe Eagle was truly dead and continued to search for her friend’s whereabouts in the following years, but as her duties increased, these efforts slowly subsided.
While rising through the ranks of the church, Luna came to believe that only she, who had worked so hard for everything she had, was truly righteous. She treated others dismissively, her arrogance growing to the point where she was thought of as unapproachable and unfriendly by those around her. Upon receiving the title of Holy Maiden, Luna became the younger sister to Angel White and Killer Queen, and was eventually granted land by the kingdom. During a meeting with the powerful noble, Dona Dona, she accepted Rabbi Village as her personal territory, the demi-human inhabitants reminding her of the friend she had lost. [1]
Based on a report from feudal lord Billitzo Lang, Luna sets out with a small group of soldiers to investigate the appearance of a so-called Demon Lord. While complaining to her coachman, she expresses a desire to surpass her sisters and claim all of the glory by defeating the Demon Lord by herself. The group later encounters Hakuto Kunai engaged in a conflict with the Mole bandits led by Wo Wungol. Luna expresses amusement at the situation before executing several bandits with her Golden Blade spell. Sensing danger, Kunai materializes his field base and tosses Aku inside for protection, the building’s sudden appearance startling Luna. She manages to wound Kunai with her magic, but he remains standing and quickly overwhelms her soldiers with terrifying strength. While shocked by his power, she notices his protectiveness towards a human girl, and begins to question whether or not he is the Demon Lord spoken of in legends. Angered by the Holy Maiden’s attempts to subdue him, Kunai punishes her with a brutal spanking and takes her money bag before departing the scene with Aku. While recovering from a most humiliating defeat, the indignant Luna decides to follow him.
She discovers Kunai eating at a restaurant in the merchant city of Yahoo and kicks down the door. While she angrily confronts him over the events of their last meeting, the Demon Lord makes her aware of the watching crowd and offers her a seat at his table. Over the course of dinner, Luna answers his questions about the mythological angels to the best of her ability, though she is unable to provide much information more than the roles they played in eons past. When asked about the mysterious statue from the Wishing Shrine, she recalls that some people believe it to be the Ophan, but dismisses these rumors as the word of heretics. The Holy Maiden proudly explains that hard work and perseverance are the core teachings of the Cherub, allowing him to correctly deduce that Luna’s past hardships were the source of her boundless ambition. When asked if the other Holy Maidens are blocking her path the top, she responds awkwardly, all but confirming his suspicions.
Luna follows him to the inn, and after another a heated exchange, he returns her money pouch in the hopes of avoiding future encounters. Barging in uninvited, she declares that Aku and Kunai are welcome to stay with her, as they used her money to pay for the room. She spends the night chatting with Aku, the girls quickly forming a friendly relationship, with Luna giving her permission to address her casually. After exchanging barbs with the Demon Lord, she mistakenly concludes that he’s a pervert interested in her butt, leading him to believe she may have awoken some masochistic tendencies following the spanking he gave her. She then takes a bath with Aku, who introduces her to the special soap gifted by the Demon Lord, its sweet aroma and cleaning ability impressing the Holy Maiden.
Later that night, Killer Queen enters the city and confronts Luna over her decision to leave the Holy Castle alone. Their argument is cut short by the appearance of the Devil Worshiping Satanist Cult, who had come to assassinate the Holy Maidens. Luna responds by brutally slaughtering the enemy with magic, but a cultist leader releases Tartarus into the streets, the unholy substance rendering the sisters powerless. They are rescued by the timely arrival of Zero Kirisame, though Luna remains unconscious as he handily defeats the Satanists.
The next day, the youngest Holy Maiden travels with her new companions to the Holy City, excitedly recounting the previous night’s battle to an amazed Aku. The Demon Lord notices the absence of her soldiers, but Luna reveals she sent them home, as he can provide her with more than enough protection. Kunai then gifts her with a set of casual clothes, believing her normal outfit to be too conspicuous. Though she accuses him of wanting her to wear something perverted, he steps out of the coach, allowing her change into the blazer and skirt. Upon his return, she commends the Demon Lord for stopping a viscous Sand Wolf pack from attacking the coach before prodding him to compliment her new outfit.
After several more days of traveling, the Demon Lord calls out his Secret Base and allows the girls to relax inside. Kunai then summons one of his assistants, a genius female doctor named Yu Kirino. Luna questions whether the mysterious woman is Kunai’s lover before introducing herself to the mad scientist, later watching in awe as she cures Aku’s injured leg with the Hand of God. Luna thanks Yu for her services, the Holy Maiden’s innocence reminding her new companion of Akane Fujisaki.
On the road to the capital, the group passes by Rabbi Village. Luna mentions the settlement is her personal territory, causing the Demon Lord to question the bleak state of the settlement. Unconcerned, the youngest Holy Maiden expresses a disinterest in governing, having allowed a church representative to manage the land. She explains that the rabbit-eared inhabitants are a race known as Bunnies who were once beloved by the Cherub, noting with some sadness that the Kingdom of Holy Light is not kind to demi-humans. Luna becomes curious about the Demon Lord’s intentions for her land before learning that he plans to build a hospital and hot springs resort.
Upon arrival they are greeted by the church representative. The man recognizes the Demon Lord from his wanted posters, but Luna clears up any misunderstandings by explaining her partnership with him. Kunai dismisses the church representative, who quickly leaves after hearing that Luna will be personally taking charge of the village. Learning that Kunai’s plan will bring increased prosperity to her land, the promise of greater revenue excites the Holy Maiden. Talking to a pair Bunnies named Kyon and Momo, the group discovers that dry soil and a lack of water has been ruining the yearly carrot harvest. Kunai presents them with a bucket capable of producing water from the village’s dry well, and a bag of fertilizer to help remedy the issue. Luna questions his bizarre ability to produce objects out of thin air, but receives no definitive answer. She compliments the Demon Lord’s kindness, but he shrugs it off, explaining his intention to raise morale so that they can employ the village’s inhabitants at his Hot Springs Resort.
Finally arriving in the Holy City, Luna escorts her companions to Artemis, a high-class restaurant patronized by the wealthy and influential. The quartet celebrates Aku’s healed leg before partaking in a strawberry tart created by the Demon Lord, which Luna greatly enjoys, but she expresses discomfort when their feast is interrupted by the appearance of Madame Ebifry Butterfly. Kunai uses his silent communication to garner information from Luna, who explains Madame’s powerful influence as the leader of the nobles’ wives while noting the woman frightens her. While Kunai charms the Madame with promises of untold luxury and beauty, Luna vouches for him, claiming that even the soap he provided has done wonders for her skin. After hearing of the Demon Lord’s plans, Ebifry agrees to visit Rabbi Village to see the promised Hot Sprigs resort, though warns Luna not to tell her younger sister. The Holy Maiden agrees, aware of the animosity between the two women. Their peaceful night is disrupted by the news of a Satanist attack, and while Luna wishes to confront them herself, Kunai refuses on the grounds that the Devil-worshipers may be after her. He forces her to stay behind for her own protection before departing to handle the situation alone.
Artemis’ patrons are soon joined by a mysterious clown who performs tricks for the frightened crowd while secretly plotting to assassinate the youngest Holy Maiden. Yu Kirino smells the poison in his pocket and removes his arms with her Hand of God, threatening to slice him up should they meet again. The undercover Satanist flees the restaurant in terror while Luna remains ignorant of his intentions. [2]
Among the Holy Maidens, Luna possesses the greatest aptitude for magic. While her full potential for growth is great, she lacks proper experience in battle, so her ability to make quick decisions on the moment is lacking.
